When someone asks you to do something you can do it, or not do it. A girl asked me to go on a trip with her to see some of the most talented amazing electronic musicians in the world at the moment a few months back. I said yes and bought my ticket. She ended up not going. However maybe that’s how it was supposed to work out. Or who the fuck knows.

We drove all night to Chicago with thoughts of Crystal Castles running through our brains.

When I wasn’t driving I woke up and looked out the window and saw a freight train yard just as the sun lit up the skies.

Everytime I see a skyline the only thing that runs through my mind is how much shit there is to skate that I have yet to skate or see, or touch.

The ghost bike, when someone dies on the 2 wheels, these go up. Memorials and reminders of how quickly you can go.

Modern day jungle gyms hold no limits for wandering minds with colorful applicants in their backpacks.

We rode the train through the city during the rain. We were staying with the newly formed Beerics crew. Justin took us to an amazing photo show by this Japanese dude at Columbia. The japanese dude would take photos of the city of all angles, then reconstruct them into a 3d realistic view of it all.

It was Bentons idea to go on this trip. I am guessing he got pretty psychadelic at the show. A few hours after this photo was taken we would find ourselves in Congress Theatre with 5000 or so other human beings, dancing from 7pm to 3am to the tunes of Roan, Crystal Castles, Chromeo and Boys Noise. Dance is an interesting feeling, honestly quite a freeing experience when you just let loose and don’t hold back. All types of styles were experienced and felt at this theatre, crowd surfing, moshing, battling, bumping, grinding, girls making out with girls, girls ripping off their clothes, girls asking you for acid, security roaming the crowd looking for smokers while dancing, people losing their shit, and just all out pandemonium. It sort of felt tribal, like when you see movies of tribes dancing insanely to a few people going nuts on bongos. I think we need more experiences like this in life for if the body just sits still all the time, it seems like it just rots. Shake it up.

I woke up the next morning with my ears still ringing of sounds of beats and chaos and noise. I was on a natural high and 48 hours later or so I still am. My body is kinda tingling and I find myself looking for the next adventure or time of excitement. Durham Dave was the contact in Chicago and he and I went skating for a few hours in the somewhat wintry temperature. There was a cow skating at this park along with a cop. It was halloween and everything seemed quite surreal. Like… whoa, this city is fucken rad. This park was great, this big bowl had so much flow.

We skated this spot for a little while and it was sketchy as fuck. First there is a huge crack at the bottom but the biggest sketch factor is the fact that there is high traffic street inches from where you are skating. I wondered what would happen if our boards were to shoot out and smash a windshield for we were not prepared to rip and dip. Our boards did shoot into the traffic a few times and cars never noticed. You can’t mimic this feeling in any skatepark.

I climbed the bridge we were skating to get this shot. It was fun, had a low death factor if you weren’t a retard. Dave said he saw a guy go by on a bicycle he knew with a huge smile. The guy on the bike was in some punk band Dave had seen the night before. Supposedly he and the bassist got in a huge fight and the guy on the bike was super bummed the rest of the night. I’m glad I could remind him to smile every now and then.

This just might top my favorite tags of all time. The other one I really like is seen around San Francisco a lot… F-Word.

Dave skated this thing pretty damn well. One of his friends did a frontside blunt on this thing which is nuts as fuck. There is a photo on flickrs somewhere. I was gonna go into a ramble about how so many people told me so many names of peoples shit I needed to check out along this trip, photographer, musicians, artists. I forgot all of it. Some Russian girls told me they wanted to dance and mentioned some musician to me. These Russian girls didn’t know about Justice which I thought was interesting. The Russian girls said they missed Russia because it was harder to get drunk in America with all of the age limits. Drunk hot russian girls, kinda sounds like the description to a porno site. Let’s get back to skating.

Climbing this bridge was quite gnarly as hundreds of cars went by and I was in high visibility mode. I snapped this photo and knew I had fucked it up with the exposure, turns out I had fucked it up with the focusing too. However after I snapped it my camera died and we were left with just our boards to go explore the city. Supposedly somebody yelled at me while I was up on the bridge… I can’t remember what but its definitely an adjective to “fucken retard”. Lately I’ve had a lot of people talk shit to me. A cop lady told me she could give me a ticket for being stupid for skating this spot on the side of I-85, some dude called me a faggot fuck for peeing on the side of the road while he kept staring at me out of the window of a car going by fast enough for him to not see me give him the middle finger. People like to talk shit when in reality the jokes on them.

I don’t fall in love that easily, but I’m pretty much in love with this girl. Alrite, I fall in love easily.

She was a voodoo doll but she had never made a real one. I once made a voodoo doll of a kid I didn’t like. I drew spots on his legs, the next day at school he broke out in a rash on his body.

Much like NYC, Chicago rooftops are awesome for views. The train would go by here and you could see the citys efforts to brownify everything. For some reason they just love the color brown in Chicago, well the graffiti buff squad does, painting everything brown that isn’t up to par including abandoned buses that homeless sleep in. Quite funny, paint it brown, then its not a problem.

She put this getup together in seriously… 45 minutes. Minus the trip to the thrift store… err junk store. I came up on a mini baby that eventually got an upside cross tattoo on its forehead, someone else a bouncing souls cd.

Michigans finest… Nerd urkle and that girl from the olympics who fucked her ankle up but still won some shit, or did some shit.

In closing there is never a closing just a next chapter to whatever the fuck is next. It’s kinda hard to leave a big city that you have yet to fully explore. Wait, what the fuck. All I’m saying is if life were a level bar, like one of those things they check your heart rate monitor with, mine would have spiked as high as possible on this trip, even higher than when I lost my virginity. Seriously listening to some very talented musicans destroy shit and inspire thousands of people to lose their minds and just go insane dancing was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life. Skating new cities is always fucking awesome too. So if the opportunity arises to go on a trip with some friends and just live it up with little to no plan, do it. Bring your board.

Been a while

Artisan and crew have wrapped up what we were hired to build at the Durham Park, and man… that pool is so much fun, seriously one of the best times I’ve had skating a pool in a long time. So many hips that just send you flying around out of in control.

There is a Game of Skate this Saturday at the flatground spot at NC State. It’s 4 bucks to enter but all proceeds go to charity. The Gravy Games are coming up at the Factory in November. And we are doing a photo show up at Endless Grind on Friday the 13th in November. Oh yea, the Durham park officially opens on November 7th, word is Toy Machine is doing a demo there that same day.

The Barrel Monster lives, and this time he has a mate. Raleigh, Hillsborough street.

I’ve been back to digging in the dirt working on the Durham park which has been rewarding as fuck, namely waking up before 1pm and being outside. But this post isn’t supposed to be about me, this is about this Steezmatic Mixtape that has been on my computer for a few weeks now. Originally that new clip was edited to a song from this combobulation of shit, but the Minor threat in me had to come out and replace the hip hop/techno mashupness.

The Trife Life

I don’t know why, but I’m quite addicted to abandoned plots of land and grimey places. Also the whole scummish lifestyle, something about it intrigues me. But then again on the flip side a nice clean area is nice too, cleanliness is next to godliness, someone once told me that shit, or I read it somewhere.

Anyways this post isn’t about the clean cut and holy, this is about the grime, the filth, and the shit tarding. First off let’s start with this documentary I stumbled upon about a couple who hops freight trains, drinks way too much whiskey and loses their brains and fights each other along the way to get married, yep… just goes to show you that love and alcohol can straight fuck the whole love and peace part up.

Coalition Skateboards

Coalition is a company out of North Carolina run by a cat named Denny who destroys the bowl up at Marsh Creek on the regular. His son kills it too. He hooked me up with some boards to try out and like every board a new shape is always interesting at first, but I found myself adapting quite well to the boards and am currently riding the Windsor Woods deck.

Coalition is sporting a pretty intense team which you can peep over on their website. One upcoming ripper is Thomas Henson who straight slays shit, hands down, on the come up.

Hmm, I turned 25 today, but lately I’ve been telling myself I’ve only been alive for at least a year. Just feels like this life shit has really started these past few years, even though I’ve been through a lot. I was wondering, who the fuck created years, birthdays, ages, time, etc. etc. etc. I guess I wasn’t wondering that hard because well I would have Wikied that shit by now, maybe I will.

Anyways what the fucks up. Went to the Durham park today. That little ledge that goes across the grass gap is gonna fuck some people up if they fuck up on the big hubba. Betta be locked in and comitted to where your gonna land or else look outs for them shins. The Grand Opening is November 7. Ujamma Boardhouse is right around the corner and in business. Dope little store with a mini ramp in the back. I woulda had a photo of the owner, Nick, banging out a back smith on it but my camera died right before I shot the photo. Anyways go check Ujamma out, Nick will school your ass on the health benefits of not eating meat and give you some other alternatives. Nick smiles a fuckload, so thats word, good diet = good feelings.

Moving along, Raleigh. It’s going. I’m still skating like a motherfucker if you really gave a shit. The kids over at NC State are having a game of skate October 24th in the area by the free expresion tunnel. Go out and get awesome. Speaking of which, I’m listening to this kid Madison Bullards mix of Andy Caldwell’s Hidden Cat song. So fucken ill. Madison jams out in Chapel Hill at a club, don’t know more details, but yea, hype shit.

I’m scoping out shitty video cameras so I can start filming for some bullshit.

Dan Deacon is saving the world

Normally I go to certain music shows and get really bummed out on the fact that people are just listening to the music and standing the fuck around afraid to move their bodies, clap their hands, or even breathe too loud. That shit fucking sucks. When I go see someone perform some music I want fucking chaos and craze. Luckily there are people like Dan Deacon in this world who can instantly transform a room of strangers into best friends and get them to work in unison and create an amazing dance party.

I’d never crowd surfed before and it was always on my list of things to do. Mission accomplished. Just note to self, tighten your shoe lace belt tighter, crowd surfing is rad, except for when you kick people in the head, and if you hold on long enough people will throw you in the air, or maybe it’s just cause I’m one skinny bastard.

So what the fuck. I like Dan Deacon, he isn’t afraid to tell you he’s fucked some shit up and is an idiot for forgetting some electrical hookup, and he had everyone doing dance battles, mimicking the actions of one person, and creating a human tunnel that went from the inside of the Cats Cradle around the outside parking lot and back in, and you got to run through it and then be apart of the tunnel, then it collapsed upon itself and you ran back through it inside.

The mans a genious for his free for allness and if he ever comes near your hometown, drop everything and go see him perform because you will have a fucking blast.

I’ve never seen 99% of the 100+ people at a show dancing and going crazy, it was like a soft core mosh pit, well pretty hard core at times but people weren’t in the violent “I’m gonna smash the fuck out of you” spirit, it was more like a bump and grind and jump up and down and spin around happy spirit.

The wonderful thing about skateboarding is the fact that everyone comes at it with their own style and recipe. Actually for most of us there is no recipe, we just charge it and go for whatever is in our heads. Chet Childress is like a top chef in this game, coming at you with all different types of herbs and spices and the kitchen would most definitely have a huge fire that seems like it’s about to turn into an all city blaze but somehow he keeps it together and presents you with some amazing food to feast on. We’ve all been given a set of eyes in which we view the world differently from everyone else, while some chase the paycheck at the end of the day most of us are seeking fulfillment through travel and experience. Chet’s been all over the world and hopefully his words will saturate your life with some of what you may be missing…

So from what I know you grew up in North Carolina, what was that like and how do you think these country woods and Southern living affected your current lifestyle?
Well that’s a hard question. When I lived in NC, growing up thats all you really know. You dont know what’s out there for you to see. I was lucky enough to grow up by the beach and it gave me surf and skate culture to be part of as a kid. It also made me a bit tougher because we were far from California and not handed the golden ticket into skateboarding. All we knew was what we saw right in front of our eyes. I love North Carolina to death, I love my friends and family too but I did my time there. I carried the torch for years man. The road and traveling just transformed my soul an made me who I am now. I’m a completely different person now at the age of 34. I feel educated from the streets , I know whats on the other side and makes me motivated. That side could be East or West, North or South but I’m not trying to settle down until I’m dead…..

What’s your best Skate Barn experience? Do you feel places like this are kinda diamonds in the rough in the sense that they provide complete freedom and comfort for those who choose to express themselves in nonconformist ways?
The SkateBarn is the shit. The best thing about that place is Jimmy Ellington. He has so much soul and passion thrown at that barn. He made me feel at home everyday I skated there. He gave us hope when Wilmingtons skate scene was shot. He lets us drink beer, smoke weed and indulge in individuality away from the main stream on a dirt road in the cuts of Hampstead. He will always be a hero and roll model to me. If your reading this Jimmy, I give you the highest honors my friend…thank you…….thank you for giving it 100 percent. Thank you for taking on a challenge……you kids out there dont even know how much hes put on the line for that skatespot…..

What’s up with the tent living? I remember you and a photographer hit the road one time to just camp out and skate, how did that go?
Dude I’ve beeen camping around the world and skateboarding the last 10 years of my life. 1 trip? How about 100 trips. Spain, New Zealand, Australia, France, all over the cracker ass America, Mexico, etc. My tents worth a million dollars to me fool. It’s touched to many different time zones. I mean this is how we do it. Sometimes you need to wake up on a beach or whatever wearing the same clothes for weeks, no shower and a giant list of experiences. I wouldn’t be a pro skateboarder if I would have stayed at home and not faced challenges. It’s what fucking drives my soul. It’s what make me fucking crazy. When I’m stuck at home for months I realise that I have a disease. It’s called the road and adventure.

Where you currently living and how is that treating ya?
I’m living in Portland, Oregon and I love it. It’s got the youth culture that I need to be surrounded by.

What’s the single best thing about skateboarding in your eyes?
The act of adventure when you find that sick ass spot. That one spot that you and your friends are snaking each other and are turned back into children… thats all I’ve been doing the last 15 years. Traveling like a pirate in search of gold… to get that clip or photo to make people want to rip… make people use there imaginations….

Is there anything in skateboarding you wish you could destroy? Is there anything you wish you could spread more of?
I dont beleive in structure, I hate message boards, I hate the justice system, Southern Baptist gross me out, conformed souls of box culture give me the creeps and people that take things so serious want to make me jump off a 100 story building.. I’ve spent years breaking rules, being drunk and making bad decisions. But I truly believe that it makes you smarter in the end…..skateboarding is the shit. Hands down. It gave me an education that nobody could afford. If i can give you any word of wisdom go for it and dont look back….follow your dreams . Dont listen to that one person if they don’t make sense to you. Shit dont listen me if I dont make any sense. I’m just a kid who scratched a lottery ticket that worked.

What type of music are ya jamming out to these days?
I’m older now. I listen to everything … jazz, soul, rap, reggae and fucking rock n roll….

How old are ya, what companies got ya back and what’s some words for the kids who are just stepping onto a skateboard for the first time?
I’m old enough to know whats right and wrong and young enough to fuck up in a second…..

The Best Trick Contest

So last weekend we held our best trick contest at Endless Grind skate shop in association with Vans, Girl, Chocolate, Four Star, and Eastern Skateboard supply. It twas a good time. The Vans crew came out and grilled up some burgers and hot dogs, kids showed up from all over to rip the makeshift ramps setup, and no one got too broke off which was rad. The SF Wasteland

I just stumbled upon this Youuuuutube thing which trips out your clips. Check what it does to the old clip of me skating through a warehouse, but then that led to me sharing with you some history on how this clip came to be.

I made this video with full intentions of ripping off Mark Gonzales I mean who hasn’t been inspired by that dude and wanted to mimic his style? I didn’t want to rip him off, but man, it was fun as shit doing so. If you take a look at the Gonz skating through a museum video you can’t help but admire everything about the act of it, just simple cruising past priceless artworks, what’s not great about that? So when I saw this up at the RVCA store off Haight street I knew I had to do something similar.

But I had just moved to San Francisco and I hardly knew anyone, how could I pull this off? Up at my job we had these white Tyvek suits we would wear when we were clearing out poison oak, which I became really good friends with one too many times. So I borrowed one or two and held on to it for good measure. Along my journies through the streets of SF I managed to acquire 2 bicycles for $10 a piece, and one complete cruiser skateboard for $5. Not to mention all the free food charities and churches would give away. SF is a friendly place if you look in the right places.

I never could find a use for the cruiser board but after skating Third and Army one day I would always watch the sun set on this graffitied building I had noticed on my first trip into the city. There was a piece by TIE who got shot in the back of the head by a rich author after climbing down from a building one night in the city. No charges were ever filed and the author got away with a clean slate. Bummer.

So one day I biked out to this building and found an entry inside. It was incredible. I gotta admit, exploring a massive graffitied building byself in a new city is kinda intimidating. The first time I went there I was a little fearful about what lay around each corner. Used needles were strung everywhere and all I could imagine was encountering some drugged up junkie who wanted whatever I had. But it never happened.

After exploring the whole building I knew I had to film something here, but you see that was easier said than done because I lived on the complete other end of San Francisco, approximately 6.5 miles away, which ain’t shit if you got a car, but if your on bike, it’s a little more complicated. I also wanted to have 2 boards for certain tricks, so I had to make multiple trips and I ended up stashing one board underneath some rocks along the water for a week straight. Luckily nobody found it.

On my first attempt at filming here I took care of some good stuff, I snagged a little broom and that thing came in great use. The place was filthy, years and years of bird shit, dust, and decay had covered the ground in 3-4 inches of gnarness. Wearing that tyvek suit definitely kept me in better health. After the first filming session I biked back home and started editing away and I realized there were still a few more things to be filmed. So I went to work for a week, then returned the next weekend to finish up. This time I scared the shit out of some kids by accident who were painting inside. They were probably 13 or 14, 2 boys and a girl. They were hyped on the building, just as much as I was. They didn’t seem to give a shit about whatever I was filming which is understandable, if I had seen me in an all white suit I probably woulda written myself off too.

Anyways the film turned out pretty good and it’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had making a clip by myself.

A few years later I would return back to SF and 2 of my good friends wanted to go in the building so bad, but my entry way had been sealed shut permanently.

Thanks again to Mark Gonzales for creating some shit I could rip off and have a great time in doing so. And if your wondering about the music I used to watch this animated film called The Snowman when I was younger, the song is from that. It’s not your normal rough and tough soundtrack to put to skating, but eh, from time to time my mind just needs some relaxation and a break from all the chaos.
